How do you get your browser (IE) to allow cookies?

I'm trying to sign in to a particular web site but am presented with the message that my browser is not allowing cookies. I've searched IE for any means of permitting cookies access but, unless I'm missing something, I can only find ways of emptying the cache. There must be some way of correcting this problem. Can anyone help a self confessed dunce on PC settings?
